A young boy, around 13 years old, walked into a school.  He had bright blue eyes and a soft face, his blonde hair combed over.  He was wearing a green sweater and brown shorts.  His socks came up to his knees and he wore worn brown shoes.  His father was waiting in an old Chevorlet, his brow furrowed at the boy's bouncy step.  The son looked back at his dad, but quickly looked into the school as he saw his father's angry expression.  He walked down the hall and into the large classroom he was assigned to for the year.  Sitting in a desk near the front, he placed his arms on his desk and his chin on his arms.
In a desk next to the young boy, sat another. This boy was around the same age, however the other boy had silky brown hair that was slicked back gracefully to make him look much older and mature.  His clothes were a simple red sweater with a black vest and plaid shorts, with well loved black shoes. His deep green eyes looked at the boy next to him with his chin on his arms. He raised his brow in curiosity and took a breath in thought about what we was going to talk to the boy about.  The topic of just a nice greeting popped into his mind. Turning his body a little, he got the courage to speak.
"Good morning, I'm Averie. What's your name?" A gentle smile slid on his face as he looked at the boy.
The blonde turned his head to Averie and he smiled, dimples forming as he raised his head.  He held out his hand, his fingers long and thin with no callouses.  They looked like the fingers of a girl, but the chewed nails proved that incorrect.  No girl would so grossly chew away their dainty nails.  "My name is Dwennon.  Pleasure to meet you Averie." Dwennon was pleased that someone had introduced themselves to him.  He had been nervous, it being his first day at this school, but was very pleased to find that someone wanted to socialize with him.
Averie's crooked smile seemed to widen at the Dwennon's dimpled one.  Having grown up in a well mannered family, he politely reached his own hand out to grab the other.  His lightly tanned hand had hard callouses due to the work at home that he helped his dad in doing, his fingers long and nimble, but his grip very strong and firm on Dwennon's.  His nails were flat and short from constantly being put to work for hours on end.  Averie nodded to the blonde boy.
"Pleasure to meet you too, Dwennon." His thoughts travelled to the boy and his fingernails; the shortness of the dainty boy's nails signalled that he was a nervous person, but he soon realized that the boy was comfortable in knowing that someone was willing to talk to him and not the other way around. Averie was a very kind boy and made friends easily.  He enjoyed the thought of having a new friend to play with during breaks and Dwennon seemed like the perfect new friend.
Dwennon's hand felt warm and safe in the other boy's grip, but he pulled away and let his hand rest on his desk.  Dwennon couldn't help but widen his smile as Averie did, the boy's grin contagious. Dwennon was shy and after a while he looked back at his desk, raising one of his hands up to his mouth, biting slightly on the already small nails he had.  He got to thinking of his father and how angry and disappointed he always seemed to be.  Dwennon's eyes dulled as he realized the man felt that way because of him, but they brightened again as he realized school was a chance to make his father slightly more proud of him.  The blonde boy looked at the brunette again.  His almond shaped eyes wandered over the boy's face but ventured no further.  He knew that though his parents told him they moved because his father got a new job, it was because a boy had complained to his parents that Dwennon had been flirting with him.  Dwennon had liked the boy, but he really didn't understand what was going on with his feelings and was only looking for someone to talk to.
Averie's own eyes noticed the change in Dwennon's and he looked back at him with care. Even though he had just met him, he couldn't help but to worry.  It wasn't only because he felt that boy was in need of a friend, but because the boy was also in need of some to talk to and care for him.  His smile turned into a frown when he noticed the boy biting his already non-existent nails. In noticing, he raised his hand toward the boy and put his hand in the way of his mouth, preventing him from biting his nails and hurting himself.  He continued to look at the boy.  Still wondering what was wrong and why his mood changed to one that is desperate for something, he spoke.
"You shouldn't bite your nails you know. You could bite your nail and rip some skin off.  My Mom did it once and she cried cause of how much it hurt when she cooked."  His big green eyes blinked, Averie hoping that what he said would make the boy stop his terrible habit. He suddenly realized that through out his school days, he never once met Dwennon.
At this he couldn't help but ask the question, "Are you new here?"  Dwennon flushed lightly and moved his hand to his lap, looking ashamed for biting his nails.  His plump lips pressed together before he lightly chewed on his bottom lip.  So, Averie had realized he was new.  For only a moment it crossed Dwennon's mind that Averie might not want to converse with him because he was new, but he brushed that idea aside.
"Yes, my parents and I moved here last week.  My father got a new job so we had to move.  It's my first day here." Dwennon made a small mental note not to chew his nails if he could.  He had noticed how it upset the other boy and for some reason, he didn't want to upset Averie.  He didn't ever want to see the boy with a frown.
Averie moved his own hand back to his desk.  He nodded at Dwennon's answer to his question. Smiling warmly at him, his eyes brightened.
"That's sad that you had to move because of your dad and leave your friends.  But on the other hand, it's good too because I wouldn't have met you.  I'll be happy to help you around the school when we move to do class activities. We could be best friends!  We'll see each other a lot and maybe once our parents meet each other, we could hang out after school and during holiday breaks too!" Averie's smile seemed to grow ten times bigger at the idea of becoming best friends with Dwennon, hoping that it would be his chance to comfort the boy and make him happy. He too didn't want to see the other boy upset and all alone.
Dwennon smiled, his eyes brightening. They were almost shining.
"I would love that.  I would be very happy if you were my best friend.  And, I'm glad I moved too.  You're honestly my first friend.  Ever.  I'm over joyed to have met you!"
Averie developed butterflies in his stomach as happiness flowed in him from listening to Dwennon.
"I'm your first friend?" Even though he was trying very hard to hide the blush, it still showed up; however, it shone as a light dust of pink.
Dwennon nodded, smiling more and more.  Someone wanted him.  Someone wanted to hang out with him.  It was all he could do to keep from hugging Averie.
"Yes."
Looking away from Dwennon, Averie smiled happily with a million thoughts running through his head about Dwennon.
"Would you like to eat lunch with me today?" He looked back at Dwennon hopefully.
"I'd love to eat with you," Dwennon replied.  He didn't want to eat on his own and eating with Averie gave him more time with his new friend.  Best friend.
"That makes me happy," Averie said, smiling even more.  As the friendship grew between them, the clock struck 8 and a school bell rung, signalling that school was starting.  A female teacher came in, dressed in a grey skirt that came an inch off the ground, showing her boots.  She also wore a plain white blouse.
"Settle down children, settle down please."
Dwennon smiled one last time at Averie before facing forward.  He folded his hands on his desk, biting his lip again.  His nervousness had come back full force.  He looked at the other kids in the room, not wanting to introduce himself to them.  His fingers twitched and he tapped his foot gently.
In the corner of his eye, Averie watched how nervous his new friend was, wishing that he could help in some way. But he knew he  couldn't because the teacher was around.  He took a breath in trying to calm himself whilst looking at the teacher.
The teacher looked around with her piercing blue eyes hid beneath thick rimmed glasses.  She pursed her lips as she looked at a slip of paper to see who was in class and who wasn't.  As usual no one was missing, but there was a new student who she had to worry about now. Sighing, she walked up to the front of her wooden desk and placed her hands neatly in front of her, smiling warmly at her young students.
"Good morning class, I'm sure that all your holiday breaks went well.  We have a new student that I would like to introduce to you all. I'm sure you will treat him with respect." She turned her head toward Dwennon, waving at him to signal he should come up front.
Dwennon stilled in his seat, reluctantly stood up, and walked to the front of the classroom.  His heart was racing and he nearly tripped over his feet walking the, what seemed like long, few feet to the front.  He could feel the pit growing in his stomach as he turned to face the classroom.  A pink tongue darted across full rosy lips as Dwennon nervously wet his.
The teacher gently put her hands on his shoulders and squeezed. "Introduce yourself dear." She said, trying to make him feel more at ease with the class in front of him.  Averie looked straight into Dwennon's eyes, trying to send the signal that he would be fine and it would all be over soon.  That all he has to do is say his name and a little about himself.
Dwennon nodded and locked eyes with Averie for a second before looking over the class again.
"Uhm, my name is Dwennon Hule and I just moved here with my parents."  He knew he was supposed to say things about himself, but he didn't know what people would think if he said he liked sports AND dolls.  He was a 13 year old boy and boys, no matter their age, don't play with dolls.
The teacher nodded and smiled to the class again "Lets say 'hello' class." Following the teacher's orders, the class said 'Hello' in sync.  Averie smiled up at him nodding in approval.  The teacher spoke to Dwennon gently. "I'm Mrs. Jonstin, Mr. Hule. You can take your seat now dear." she said, giving him a gentle push toward his seat again. "Please take out your English work books, and turn to page 4 please, class." Again the class followed the teacher's orders and took out their books, Averie still watching Dwennon.
Dwennon raced to his seat.  He pulled out his book and turned to the correct page.  He looked over at Averie and smiled a little, silently thanking him before looking back at his English work book.
Averie quickly looked at his book as Mrs. Jonstin wrote the day's lesson on the board. She began to talk about how proper grammar is important and what they would be learning in the next few weeks.  Averie wasn't even paying attention, his mind on Dwennon and how much he was looking forward to having him in his class now, and the fun in having him as a best friend.
Dwennon listened to the teacher, but her voice became distant as his mind wandered to doing things with Averie.  It began to cross his mind about how his parents might react to him becoming attached to a boy after what had happened in the last town.  He sighed and bit on the end of his pencil nervously.  He pressed his knees together and rested his cheek on his hand.  The blonde looked at Averie from the corner of his eye and smiled slightly.  Eventually, Dwennon looked back at the teacher figuring that anything would be worth Averie's friendship.
The teacher continued to write things such as rules of grammar, nouns, and verbs.  She turned toward the class to see if they were following along and working.  Her eyes fell upon the two boys and she smiled politely at them.
"Mr. Hule and Mr. Lahm, please pay more attention to the lesson." At her comment Averie shook his head and smiled at his teacher.
"Yes, Mrs. Jonstin, my apologies."  He began writing in his work book and started paying attention, but not without looking at Dwennon in the corner of his eye.
Dwennon nodded and began working, looking at Averie from the corner of his eye again.  He noticed the boy looking as well and he smiled, flushing lightly.  He finished his work and paid distant attention to the teacher.  After they went on to more lessons, the bell rung, indicating lunch.  Dwennon stood and picked up his bag.  He watched as many kids rushed out towards the cafeteria.  Two boys walked over to Averie and grinned.
"Hey Averie!  You wanna play football at lunch?" One of the boys, Arthur, tossed the football between his two hands.
"Ya!" The other boy, Greggorie, nodded vigorously. "There's gonna be a tournament going on this 'ole week!  You're our best player chap, so you gotta do this.  Please?"
Averie looked at the boys then at Dwennon, he stood and picked his bag up from the floor. Smiling sheepishly, he looked at his two friends.
"I promised Dwennon I would eat lunch with him today though. So, I would love to but he is new and I don't want to leave him all alone.  Unless he would like to join in. Other wise...." Averie looked at Dwennon, hoping to hear his opinion on the matter.
Dwennon smiled.
"I'd like to join if I could.  Football is one of my favourite sports."  The two boys shrugged and nodded, happy to have more in the fray.
"Alright, it's settled then!  Let's go so the captains can pick their teams."
Averie smiled wide at Dwennon then back at the boys.
"We'll meet you there then." Turning toward Dwennon, he smiled more. "I didn't know you liked football. That's really cool that we have something in common with each other." He slowly began to walk waving at Dwennon to join him. "Come on! The good spots will be taken!"
Dwennon rushed after Averie, sticking close to him.  He was excited to play, but was feeling shy around all the new people.  There were many boys around, all of them talking as two older boys walked to the middle of the field.
"Alright you munchkins!  Let's pick teams!  Warder and I are your captains!"
Warder smiled proudly and looked at the batch of kids in front of him. "Well, this is an okay turn out, don't yeah think?"
Kurt nodded, grinning.
Averie looked at the two boys, hoping that he got picked on the same team as Dwennon so that they wouldn't be separated.
Kurt pointed to Averie. "I pick Averie!"
Averie made his way toward his captain, still praying that Dwennon would be picked to be on his team. Warder hummed and pointed to a tall red head.
"I choose James."
The picking went on, Dwennon fading back slightly until he and one other boy were left.  Kurt thought for a moment before pointing to the shorter boy next to Dwennon.
"I choose Pip."
Pip smiled and started walking before tripping on the ground and falling on his face.
Warder smiled. "Your with me new kid."
Dwennon nodded and helped Pip up before going over to his team. Dwennon looked over at Averie before looking back at his captain.
Averie sighed, he really wanted to be on the same team as Dwennon. Warder sighed. "Alright who has a coin we can flip to see who goes first?"
Dwennon reached into his pocket and held out a coin. "Here."
He grabbed it smiling. "Thanks."  Warder then turned to Kurt. "Head or Tail buddy?"
"Heads and you know it."
Warder rolled his eyes and flipped the coin, snatching it in the air and setting it on his hand. He looked at it and smiled.
"Tails, I get the ball."
Kurt frowned but nodded.  "Team!  Form!"  As Kurt's team got into position, Kurt went to the front, ready for Warder.
Warder nodded to his team to signal to get ready, walking up toward Kurt smiling. "You ready Kurt?" He had a small smirk on his face.
Kurt smirked back, tilting his head down.  "Never been more ready in my life."
Warder just smiled and put his foot on the ball. "Okay, if you say so." Suddenly the ball went flying behind him and toward his team. "GO!!" The teams starts running every where trying to get the ball in the goal.
Dwennon moved forward as one of his teammates kicked the ball to him.  He sped toward the opposing goal and looked for someone to pass to.
One of the other team members got in front of him, blocking his way. Warder was there, open. "New kid! HERE!!"
Dwennon skillfully passed the ball to Warder.
Warder tried to make a pass in the goal which Averie was covering. He kicked it and Averie skillfully grabbed the ball out of the air smiling then throwing it back toward his teammates. Warder groaned and pressed his hand to his forehead.
"Kurt! You know Averie is good!! You just had to put him at the goal!"
"Well DUH!" Kurt replied, grinning.
Averie smiled proudly, yelling to the captain, "Sorry Warder!" He watched as the people scrambled again to get the ball. The game went on, ending in a tied score of 0 – 0.
Averie ran over to Dwennon, smiling like a mad man. "You did awesome!"
Dwennon flushed, but grinned widely, still panting from running.   "You did better!"
Averie shook his head, still smiling. "Nah, I just stood there and defended a net, you had to run around. Wanna eat our lunch now?"
Dwennon nodded.  "Yeah.  Lunch sounds good."
Averie wrapped his arms around Dwennon's shoulders. "Come Dwennon, we should get some food in you, you'll need it from all the running." He smiled at him as they walked toward a huge oak tree where they had set their bags. The tree created a big area of cool shade for the boys.
Dwennon couldn't help but let a blush settle over his cheeks.  He nodded, glad that he was flushed from the game.  He sat on a root and pulled out his lunch bag.  He opened his sandwich and shrugged when he found the only spread on it butter.  He bit into his sandwich and sipped the juice container his mother had packed for him along with the sandwich.
Averie sat on a root across from him, looking at the sandwich curiously before grabbing his own sack lunch.  The brunette took out a turkey sandwich and some apple juice.
"Is butter the only thing are your sandwich?" He asked, looking at Dwennon curiously. He pulled his mouth into a small smile, laced with concern.
Not wanting Averie to worry, Dwennon shook his head.  "No there's peanut butter on it too."  Dwennon finished the first half of his sandwich and sipped on his juice before taking the other half in his ever soft hands.
Noting that Dwennon seemed to be hiding something, Averie took out his extra sandwich and set it on his lap. The boy smiled as he munched on his first sandwich, sipping the juice as well.
"Well, here, you can have my other one.  I don't really eat it most of the time anyway so you can have it."
Dwennon looked at the sandwich hungrily but shook his head. "I shouldn't.  My parents don't like me taking things from other people, even if they offer it as a gift."
Averie shook his head to. "Just eat it, I'm willingly giving it to you and how will they know that I gave it to you? It's what friends do, they help each other out. And you're my friend." He smiled warmly at Dwennon, hoping that the boy understood that he was only trying to help and didn't want to see him hungry.  Averie finished his own sandwich and continued to sip his juice, still looking at Dwennon.
Dwennon looked at the sandwich and sighed.  "I'll only have half." He reached out and took half the sandwich, eating it hungrily.  He licked his lips after he finished, smiling happily before finishing his juice.
Averie wanted to protest but before he could the school bell rung, announcing that lunch break was over and it was time to head back into the classroom.  Averie sighed and quickly finished his juice, putting the empty carton in the sack and cleaning up his mess. Looking toward Dwennon, he smiled and held his hand out in offer to take the blonde's garbage.
"Here let me take that and we'll head back to class."
Dwennon smiled and handed him his trash before standing up.  He followed Averie to the trash can before the two boys made their way back to class. As they walked, many kids congratulated them on a game well played, clapping hands on their shoulders, shaking their hands, or giving them a pat on the back.
The two boys happily gave thanks to them.  Dwennon was still slightly nervous because he didn't know most of the kids very well,  but they both smiled brightly as they entered the classroom again.  Mrs. Jonstin smiled at her class and began to write on the board again before class began.  As the other kids came in, Dwennon and Averie took their seats. Mrs. Jonstin turned to the now full classroom and smiled.
"And how was your lunch break class? Hopefully good, with the entertainment with the football game that went on?" The class nodded and a few replayed the game to her.
The rest of the day passed on uneventfully until it was time for the kids to get picked up and go home.  Dwennon went out to wait for his father, almost dreading when his father would arrive.  He looked around to see if Averie was getting picked up or riding the bus.
Averie looked around to see if his mother's car was there. Sighing, he looked for someone and spotted Dwennon. Glad to see the boy, he quickly walked over to him. "Hey! You get picked up too?"
Dwennon nodded, happy to see his friend still there.  "Yeah, my dad picks me up."
Averie nodded and smiled more. "That's cool, my mom comes to pick me up." Suddenly Dwennon's father drove up, an unhappy look upon his face due to a bad day at his new job.  He stopped and looked toward his son coldly.  Averie noticed and looked at Dwennon, trying to keep his smile. "Guess your dad is here isn't he?"
Dwennon saw the look on his father's face but he kept his smile on. "Yeah, that's my father."  Dwennon smiled and waved to Averie one last time before getting into his father's car, not daring to look the man in the face.
Averie waved as he ran over to his mother's car, smiling at her as he got inside. But Dwennon's father looked at Averie with suspicion.  After a moment the man looked back at his son.
"Who was that boy?" he said with a cold voice, still not over incident that his son was part of.  He didn't wait for an answer, quickly taking off incase they caused a scene.
Dwennon looked at his hands, which were folded in his lap, be fore he spoke. "That was my new friend, Averie.  He talked to me in class today and invited me to eat with him at lunch.  We also played football, even though we were on opposite teams." Dwennon nervously looked at his father, hoping his answer wouldn't upset him further.
His dad's cold look softened a little at the fact the boy invited Dwennon to lunch and not the other way around.
"You played a game of football with a group of boys?", he said as his interest was gained by the fact his son was already playing sports despite it being his first day there. "How did you do in it? Get any goals?"
Dwennon shook his head.  "I didn't score any goals, but hopefully I will tomorrow.  Of course if Averie is the goalie again, it'll be hard." Dwennon smiled a little as he felt his father relax.
His father nodded, looking at the road carefully. "Good friendly competition. Maybe you and I could, you know, have some father son time and get you even better so you can beat your friend the next time." His back became straighter at the thought of his boy being the best player there was.  However, his thoughts traveled back toward the incident and he sighed, hoping that his son was getting away from such tendencies and beginning to take interest in girls.
Dwennon nodded and smiled a little more.  "That would be fun." Dwennon looked out the car window and watched the scenery go by.  "Averie is really nice.  He offered me part of his lunch today...." Dwennon knew he probably shouldn't mention lunch to his father, but he had always told his parents everything his whole life.
His father stiffened a little at the mention of him being offered lunch. "He did? Dwennon. Remember what we told you about receiving things? Do you need to be reminded again by your mother and me when we get home? We don't take things others give us. We don't want to be a pain in their side, do we?" He coldness began to return as they talked. As Dwennon's Father turned into the gravel drive, he parked before turning to his son with a hard face. "I will only let this slip once, alright? If it happens again, we'll have to have another talk about this. You don't want that to happen do you?"
Dwennon paled and nodded quickly.  "N-No father."  He grabbed his bag and hopped out of the car, walking quickly to the door to his house.  His mother greeted him and he smiled at her, running up to his room.  He shut his door quietly, not wanting to get in anymore trouble.  He put his bag on his desk and pulled a trunk out from under his bed.  Dwennon unlocked the locks and pulled out two dolls.  One was a boy doll, the other a girl with an eye missing.  He began to play with them, wondering what it would be like to have real kids with someone he loved who loved him back.  He spoke softly so no one would hear him, making the two dolls brother and sister.
Downstairs, his mother looked up curiously before going back to cooking dinner.  She heard the door slam and stopped cooking so that she could greet her husband.
"Hello dear," she said, accompanying her words with a peck to his cheek. The father smiled at her but it was a hard smile, not reaching his eyes.
As he received her kiss, he sighed out, "Hello sweet heart." He walked over to his green armchair and sat down, rubbing his face before relaxing into the seat.  He set down his bag and took out the local newspaper, opening it with a quick flick of his wrist.  "How was your day?" His wife shrugged and followed him after turning down the heat of the stove.
"My day was fine.  However, I can tell something is up.  What happened today honey?"  She looked up the stairs where her son had disappeared to.  "Is he already...?" She looked at him, worried, wondering if her son was already delving into forbidden feelings.
Her husband sighed, shaking his head. "No, I saw a boy with him today. I asked him about it and he surprisingly told me that the boy talked to him! As in he talked first and not Dwennon. Then he told me about how he was invited to eat lunch with said boy and ended up playing a competitive game of football too! He is already playing sports again and it was only his first day Julie! His friend was one heck of a goalie apparently. So I told him that we could have some bonding time and practice to get him better so he can show the boy his true strength. He had a wonderful day it seemed. Unlike me. Stupid ninnies. They just sit around their offices and gossip about their wives and how they think she is up to something. How their children are doing things that are impossible. Like this one guy's kid who burned down his garage because he got angry at him! It makes our boy look like a saint!  Even with what he did," he said, running his hand over his face again. "Julie, I'm beginning to think maybe our boy," he paused, "maybe our boy is changing his ways after.... Maybe he knew that what he was wrong and he just wanted our attention? It was still wrong, but are we paying enough attention to him? Is he becoming desperate for love?  I still think he might not be right in the head, but just maybe Julie.... Just maybe he is changing after the incident." He looked at his wife hopefully, keeping his promise about not mentioning lunch.
Julie smiled and nodded.  "I think he is honey.  Yesterday he told me he threw out the dolls too.  Maybe our son is finally getting on the right track....  But we do pay attention to him, maybe not in ways he notices, but we do dear.  We do."  She gave her husband a pat on the back and went back into the kitchen.  "But for now Henry, could you get Dwennon for dinner?  I think he's in his room."
Nodding, Henry got up. He groaned a little as he stretched. "Alright, I'll go get him." He made his way toward the steps. As he walked, his heavy footsteps echoed and made much noise that went up the staircase toward Dwennon's bedroom.  As he got to the top of the stairs,he stretched again and continued to his son's room.
Dwennon, hearing the loud footsteps, gasped and stood up.  He went back over to the trunk quickly, but in his nervous fear, couldn't get it open.
"Oh...Oh jeez..." He felt tears pressing at the corner of his eyes.  He couldn't get caught, not now.  Not yet.  Dwennon finally unlocked the trunk and shoved the dolls inside.  Right before his father entered his room, he pushed the trunk under his bed and stood.
His father walked in, smiling at him.
"Hey kiddo, time for dinner, come on." He waved for him to follow. "Wash your hands first." Dwennon nodded, not speaking as he went to the bathroom and washed up before dinner.  He ate in silence before going to his room and laying down. Henry looked at his wife, smiling contentedly. "Little guy must have been hungry and exhausted from the day today." He wrapped his arms around his wife happily and kissed her cheek. "Lovely dinner as expected from my lovely wife." Julie smiled and leaned into her husband.
"Love you honey."
